Assam: Dog smuggling group arrested in Guwahati

Guwahati: With the cattle smuggling in the state, dog smuggling has also become one of the most illegal businesses and in a recent incident, a dog smuggling group was arrested after police discovered a dog kept inside a gunny bag from Dhirenpara area of Guwahati on Thursday.

A patrolling unit of West Guwahati police broke the ring after they discovered a car with few people in dubious conditions inside.

When police apprehended the suspects, they discovered a puppy hiding in a gunny bag. On questioning them further, the group of five men were unable to provide adequate responses.

Police after then examined the vehicle and discovered a total of ten gunny sacks inside.

The accused persons have been identified as Sunil Bay (19), Devid Ingti (37), Dhoni Ram Ranghang (22), Seron Singh Phangshu (30), and Longbison Lekthe (22).

A case has been filed under section 379 of the Indian Penal Code, in conjunction with section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

The police have also launched an investigation into the matter to ascertain further links.

Sharing the news on Twitter, Guwahati Police wrote, “An alert intervention by a WGPD team from Fatashil Ambari PS caught & arrested 5 men for stealing & smuggling dogs after they were found loitering suspiciously at Dhirenpara Itabhata Tiniali last night. 1 dog inside a gunny sack, 10 empty gunny sacks & 1 Tiago car were recovered.”
