5 Dead, Many Feared Missing After Cargo Ship Crashes Into Bangladesh Ferry
Guwahati: At least five people were killed including more than ten went missing after bulk carrier ploughed over a tiny ferry in a river near Dhaka in Bangladesh on Sunday.
According to police, nearly two dozen people managed to swim ashore after the MV Ruposhi-9 inland cargo carrier ran over the small watercraft in the Shitalakshya River, southeast of Dhaka.
According to footage carried by local media, people yelling in terror as the cargo barge collided with the ferry and jumping into the dirty waterway as the craft soon sank.
“One body has been retrieved, and 22 individuals have successfully swum ashore,” a police officer inspector Aslam Mia said.
Mia further informed that the ferry was carrying more than 60 persons at the time of the disaster.
Meanwhile, district administrator Monjurul Hafiz said that the coast guard personnel and divers were assisting with rescue attempts.
