Nagaland: Govt urges NSCN(IM) to continue negotiations

Guwahati: The Nagaland government’s core committee on Naga Political Issues asked the NSCN (IM) to continue negotiations with the Centre.

According to ruling United Democratic Alliance chairman TR Zeliang, the core committee, led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, made the appeal during a protracted meeting with the NSCN (IM) on Saturday.

Following a visit to Nagaland by Centre’s interlocutor AK Mishra in April, NSCN (IM) leaders travelled to New Delhi and returned last week. According to Zeliang, they have stated that they will not engage any more conversations with the Centre after their return, as reported by PTI.

According to the article, the Core Committee would relay to the Centre whatever has been discussed with the NSCN(IM).

The conference was held, according to government spokesperson Neiba Kronu, to improve understanding with the NSCN(IM) in order to find a quick solution to the Naga issue.

He said the discussion, which lasted nearly four hours, focused on the competencies.

It was agreed that more discussion on the NSCN (IMdemands)’s for a separate flag and constitution for the Nagas was required. Kronu remarked.

They also highlighted the necessity for Assam Chief Minister and North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) chairman Himanta Biswa Sarma’s assistance, he said. “It’s preferable if someone can speak for the Centre as well as the Naga people.”
