Guwahati, 23rd August: A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Guwahati’s Lalmati area on Wednesday as a young girl took her own life, allegedly due to prolonged physical and mental harassment inflicted by her paternal uncle and aunt.
According to initial reports, the deceased had been enduring both mental and physical abuse at the hands of her relatives for a considerable period of time.
Sources suggest that the harassment was fueled by a property dispute in Pathsala, where the girl’s name was on the ownership documents. Allegedly, her paternal uncle and aunt subjected her to torment with the aim of obtaining control over the property.
Locals in the area have claimed that the victim had lost her parents and was living with her paternal uncle. The couple had two daughters, and the alleged jealousy over the victim’s appearance further escalated the mistreatment.
The girl was living with her paternal uncle after losing her parents. Her paternal uncle and aunt were abusing her because she has property in Pathsala under her name. The girl was attractive, but the couple had two kids who were not particularly attractive. This fueled the flames of the two daughters’ growing envy over her appearance, and the paternal aunt worried that if she marries, they will lose control of the land. She was subjected to extreme torment by the pair out of avarice, forcing her to accept death, according to a local.
In the wake of the tragedy, the police have taken the deceased’s paternal uncle, identified as Gopesh Medhi, into custody as part of their investigation into the circumstances leading to the girl’s distressing decision.
