MS Dhoni Likely to Retire from IPL after 17th Season
Sports Desk, 22nd March: Legendary Indian cricketer MS Dhoni is expected to announce his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the conclusion of the 17th season. Although Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020, he continued his IPL journey.
The strongest indication of Dhoni’s impending retirement came with his decision to transfer the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad before the IPL 2024 opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Reports suggest that speculation surrounding Dhoni’s retirement prompted the franchise to ensure a seamless transition in his role.
While Dhoni, aged 42, is anticipated to step back from playing, he is expected to maintain a significant role within CSK. CSK’s attempt at leadership transition in the 2022 edition, which was unsuccessful, highlights the importance of preparing for Dhoni’s eventual departure as a player.
Despite undergoing knee surgery after leading CSK to their fifth title, Dhoni has played 250 IPL matches, scoring over 5000 runs with a strike rate of 135.92. Last season, he adjusted his batting position due to knee problems but is expected to bat higher up this season after regaining full fitness.
Dhoni’s tenure as CSK captain has been illustrious, leading the team to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 victories. He captained CSK in 235 out of their 249 matches across all tournaments, showcasing his leadership prowess in the IPL. Additionally, Dhoni led Rising Pune Supergiant for 14 matches in 2016 and 2017 when CSK was suspended from the IPL.
With a win-loss ratio of 1.461, Dhoni’s leadership record in the IPL ranks among the best, highlighting his strategic acumen and success as a captain in the league.
