Shillong: A two-member fact-finding committee appointed by the Ministry of Education arrived at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Sunday to investigate allegations of irregularities against Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla.
The committee, headed by former UGC Chairman Prof. D.P. Singh and former Assam University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, is scheduled to meet with student bodies, including the NEHUSU and KSU NEHU Unit, on Monday. They will also interact with faculty, non-teaching staff, and conduct on-site inspections of university infrastructure.
The Ministry has mandated the committee to complete its investigation within 15 days of the November 15 order. The probe will focus on controversial appointments, deteriorating infrastructure, declining university rankings, and allegations of the Vice Chancellor’s non-responsiveness.
The Meghalaya High Court, which is overseeing the matter, has adjourned the hearing to December 6. The court will review the committee’s findings, recommendations, and any subsequent corrective actions taken by the university.
The arrival of the central team is seen as a significant step towards addressing the growing concerns within the NEHU community. The outcome of the investigation will have far-reaching implications for the future of the institution.
