Achievement of Two Assamese Mountaineer to Climb Mt Kanchenjunga
Guwahati, 25 May: Two Assamese mountaineers, Bhaskar Baruah and Jayanta Nath, proudly unfurled the national flags of India, the Tiranga and the traditional Assamese flag, the Gamosa at the peak of Mount Kanchenjunga in a spectacular act of bravery and perseverance. Assam Mountaineering Association (AMA), the first organisation from Northeast India to attain this special distinction was the first to do so making this accomplishment a historic milestone. The entire country celebrated their successful climb.
President Droupadi Murmu officially launched the Mount Kanchenjunga Expedition-2023 by presenting Manas Barua, the team’s captain with the ice-axe baton and the national flag.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who served as chef de mission, gave the trip his full backing. President Murmu was cordially welcomed by Chief Minister Sarma with the traditional Assamese “Gamosa,” which stands for courtesy and respect. Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, various government representatives, and Assam Mountaineering Association members also attended the occasion.
The state Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare funded the Mount Kanchenjunga Expedition-2023. The squad also included Koushik Das, Bhaskar Baruah, Jayanta Nath, Shekhar Bordoloi, medical officer Dr. Jagadish Basumatary deputy leader Upen Chakraborty and Manas Barua. The group started their ascent to the base camp which was set up at a height of 5,200 metres.
The achievements of Bhaskar Baruah, Jayanta Nath and the entire team are proof of the Assamese people’s enduring dedication and unflappable spirit. Their accomplishment will definitely inspire future generations to pursue excellence in the sport of climbing, serving as a source of pride and inspiration for the entire country. Assam Mountaineering Association and the mountaineers deserve the nation’s sincere congratulations for achieving this historic feat.
Meanwhile, in a congratulatory message to the team, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “In a moment of soaring pride for us, glad to share that 7:15 am today, two Assamese mountaineers – Bhaskar Baruah and Jayanta Nath unfurled the Tiranga and the Gamnusa at Mt Kanchenjunga, 3rd highest mountain peak.”
He further wrote, “With this, Assam Mountaineering Association (AMA) has become the first organisation from NE to have this unique distinction. We are honoured to have supported this endeavour. My congratulations to the Mountaineers and AMA.”
