Additional Troops Deployed as Heavy Firing Continues in Manipur

National Desk, 6 June: More troops have been redeployed in the Manipur area of Sugnu and Serou where several acts of violence, arson and sporadic firing by insurgent groups have been reported. The extra soldiers were sent to strengthen ongoing large area control operations, ambushes and steps to stop violence and burning.

Assam Rifles, BSF and State Police conducted substantial area control operations in the Sugnu/Serou districts which led to sporadic gunfire exchanges between security forces and rebels on the night of June 5 and 6. Security forces made the necessary preparations to stop rebels from “breaking contact” and fleeing to surrounding locations.

Beginning in the early morning hours, the shooting became more intense and one BSF member died in the ensuing shootout.

Two Assam Rifles personnel sustained Gun Shot injuries and have been evacuated by Army Helicopter to Mantripukhri, Imphal. Inputs indicate some casualties to insurgents and are being verified on ground. During the preliminary search, Two AK series Rifles, one 51mm mortar, two Carbines, ammunition & warlike stores have been recovered from the general area. Operations are in progress to sanitise the area.
