AFSPA will soon be removed from all areas of Assam: Amit Shah
Guwahati: AFSPA to be removed from all the areas of Assam. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday while addressing a gathering at the Nehru stadium in Guwahati during the President’s Colours Award presentation said that the government is committed to removing Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from all areas of Assam.
Meanwhile, Shah stated that during the Narendra Modi government’s eight years in power, 13 districts in the state were declared AFSPA-free.
It may be mentioned that AFSPA was introduced in Assam in the 1990s, and it was extended seven times, according to the Home Minister. After eight years of Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, 13 districts in the state have been declared AFSPA-free, and the law has been repealed in over 60% of Assam.”
He further added that Assam’s AFSPA zones have shrunk as the state’s law and order situation has improved and peace agreements have been signed. “We will ensure that AFSPA is repealed in all parts of the state,” Shah added.
It is to be noted that the Home Minister presentsed the President’s Colours Award to Assam Police on behalf of President Ram Nath Kovind. Assam is the 10th state to be honoured with the awrd.
