Guwahati: Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani was brought to Guwahati on Thursday after being arrested in Gujarat by the Assam Police for a social media post.
According to reports, Mevani was brought to Kokrajhar by road after arriving at the Guwahati airport about 11 am
According to his assistant Suresh Jat, the prominent Dalit leader was detained in Gujarat’s Palampur town after a case was filed in Kokrajhar.
However, the case was brought under IPC section 153A, which deals with offences that promote animosity between communities.
“According to a document supplied by Assam Police officials, a FIR has been filed in connection with a tweet sent by Mevani a few days ago. However, the tweet has been withheld by Twitter. It was about Nathuram Godse,” he added.
Mevani, a former Independent MLA from Gujarat’s Banaskantha district has lately joined the Congress.
