Assam: Bangladeshi National Apprehended, Sent Back Amidst Rising Tensions
Assam: A Bangladeshi national was apprehended near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Sribhumi district on Sunday and subsequently repatriated to Bangladesh.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the incident via X, praising the heightened vigilance along the international border.
The apprehension comes amid rising tensions between the two nations, particularly in the wake of recent reports of religious persecution in Bangladesh.
Earlier this month, the Sribhumi District Hotel Association imposed a temporary ban on Bangladeshi nationals staying in local hotels, expressing concerns over the safety of minority groups in the neighboring country.
The ban gained momentum following the arrest of ISKCON member Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu in Bangladesh, which sparked widespread condemnation and calls for action.
The All Tripura Hotel and Restaurant Owners Association has also joined the protest, suspending services for Bangladeshi citizens until the situation in Bangladesh improves.
While emphasizing that the measures are temporary and intended to draw attention to the plight of religious minorities in Bangladesh, the associations reaffirmed India’s commitment to secular values. They condemned the ongoing violence in Bangladesh as “alarming and unacceptable.”
