Assam: Bhogali Bihu Festivities Begin with Community Fishing at Gereki Beel

Assam: As Assam prepares for the grand celebration of Bhogali Bihu, the state came alive with the tradition of community fishing on the eve of the festival, known as Uruka. People gathered in large numbers at ponds and lakes across the region, embodying the festival’s spirit of togetherness and cultural pride.

A significant highlight of the celebrations was the massive gathering at Gereki Beel in Tezpur, where thousands participated in the cherished ritual of community fishing. This age-old practice, deeply rooted in Assamese culture, symbolizes camaraderie and the collective joy of the harvest season.

Gereki Beel, a historic wetland, holds a special place in Assam’s cultural heritage. It is famously associated with iconic figures such as Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha and Bhupen Hazarika, who are said to have participated in fishing activities here, further enriching its legendary status.

The celebration at Gereki Beel not only revives these traditional practices but also highlights the deep connection between the people and their cultural roots. As families prepare for feasts, bonfires, and festivities, the enduring bond between the community and its heritage shines brightly, making Bhogali Bihu a true celebration of life and togetherness.
