Assam: BPF President Demands March or April BTC Elections
Assam: Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) President and former BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary has urged that the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections be held in March or April, aligning with the end of the financial year. Mohilary emphasized that this timeline complies with legal mandates and ensures proper fiscal management under the current Pramod Boro-led government.
Mohilary criticized Boro’s push for December elections, stating that it would grant the administration a six-month fiscal year allocation, violating financial norms. He also accused Boro of neglecting the welfare of specific communities during his tenure as Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Chief.
The tenure of Pramod Boro’s BTC government is set to conclude in April 2024, in line with the current budget cycle. As the elections approach, political parties, including the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and the opposition BPF, are intensifying their preparations.
In a significant development, 27 members from the Ex-National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Ex-NDFB), All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), and the UPPL youth wing joined the BPF during a meeting at Bishmuri. Additionally, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Prabin Boro and Congress leader Deepjyoti Saharia officially joined the BPF on January 16. With political momentum building, the upcoming BTC elections are poised to reshape the region’s political landscape.
