Assam: Chaos Unfolds at Zubeen Garg’s Concert in Beltola, Allegations of Police Brutality Arise

Guwahati, 22nd April: A tumultuous scene erupted at a concert featuring the renowned singer Zubeen Garg in Beltola on Sunday, resulting in a confrontation between police and attendees that led authorities to resort to a lathicharge to restore order.

Reports surfaced of alleged assaults on media personnel during the altercation, with journalists reportedly detained despite providing identification. An official complaint has been lodged against Police Officer Tirtha Deka in connection with the incident.

Additionally, accusations have arisen regarding the confiscation of several mobile phones from audience members. Witnesses claimed that around 20-25 mobile phones were seized by Basistha police during the event.

One attendee, speaking anonymously, recounted his experience: “I attended Zubeen’s concert and witnessed a scuffle among audience members. As a journalist, I attempted to record the incident, but police officers forcibly confiscated my phone and prevented me from documenting the scene. I witnessed similar actions against other audience members.”

The focal point of the incident centers on Police Officer Tirtha Deka, who allegedly engaged in aggressive behavior during the event. Deka, a sub-inspector at Basistha police station, faces accusations of misconduct.

Attendees and eyewitnesses expressed dismay over the police’s actions, criticizing their indiscriminate lathicharge and the reported targeting of media personnel instead of addressing unruly behavior among spectators.
