Assam: Release of Assault Accused Sparks Outrage in Guwahati; Questions Raised Over Decision

Guwahati, 22nd April: In a controversial move, the Basistha Police station in Guwahati, Assam, has released the three individuals accused of brutally assaulting a police constable, despite three cases being registered against them in connection with the incident. The accused have been identified as Ankur Dutta, Krishanu Lahakkar, and Debakanta Debnath.

The decision to release the accused, accompanied by a notice, has shocked the community, particularly in light of the severity of the assault. The incident occurred on Sunday when the accused not only physically assaulted the police constable, identified as Pradeep Basumatary, but also attempted to set him on fire by dousing him in diesel. Basumatary was responding to complaints of disturbances at a local bar named ECHO when the altercation turned violent.

Following the incident, police collected crucial evidence from the scene, including mobile phones and dustbins, to aid in the investigation. Earlier, two actress were detained in connection with the assault, underscoring the seriousness of the case.

The release of the accused has sparked outrage among various quarters, with many questioning the decision given the gravity of the assault and the multiple cases registered against them. The move has raised concerns about the administration of justice and the need for accountability in addressing instances of violence against law enforcement personnel.
