Assam: Dry Day announced in Majuli for by-elections

Guwahati: Dry days have been announced for 48 hours for the by-elections in the Majuli (Scheduled Tribe) constituency.

In order to ensure a smooth Assembly election in Assam, the state government has declared dry day from Saturday to Monday next in view of the state bye election to be held for the seat on March 7.

There will be a total ban on the sale of liquor, distribution of spirituous, fermented or intoxicating liquors or other substances at a hotel, public eating house, tavern, shop or any other places within a polling area during the period of 48 hours.

In the Constituency that shall head to the booths falling under the 99-Majuli (ST) Legislative Assembly, the order will be placed from 5pm, March 5 till March 7, 5pm.

The ban on liquor will also include the dates of re-poll, if any.

In a directive issued on Thursday, Assam’s chief electoral officer (CEO) stated that this was done in compliance with Section 135(C) of the Representation of People Act, 1951.
