Assam: Families Displaced by River Erosion Await Government Assistance

Guwahati: Five families from Bhanga Krishnapur village in Sri Bhumi district have been living in dire conditions since 2019, after their homes were washed away by erosion in the Kushiyara River.

Despite their continued struggle, they have yet to receive significant government assistance, including housing under the Prime Minister’s scheme.

The affected families, daily wage earners, have been left without proper shelter for five years. The local administration temporarily relocated a market shed to provide housing, but no permanent relief measures were implemented.

Six months ago, the government allocated plots of land, but financial constraints have prevented the families from constructing houses.

Ashish Nath, former president of the Zilla Parishad, expressed concern upon learning about the situation. “It is a matter of great sadness that the list of Prime Minister’s residences has been published, yet these families remain excluded,” he stated. “They urgently need government support to rebuild their lives.” The families continue to await proper housing and financial assistance, hoping for immediate intervention from the authorities.
