Assam: Foreign Cigarettes seized in Guwahati, 2 held
Guwahati: In a major recovery of smuggled items this time Assam Police seized a huge quantity of foreign origin cigarettes in Kamrup district of the state.
Following a tip off from sources the Changsari police officials launched a search operation at the Madanpur tollgate in Guwahati’s Baihata Chariali area and intercepted a suspected Indian Postal Department’s vehicle. During the search operation inside the vehicle the police recovered a huge number of foreign cigarettes.
Moreover, the seized cigarettes were transported from Mizoram to Delhi as a parcel.
Meanwhile, the Indian Postal Department’s parcel van which is registered with the number HR 55 L 8802 was seized by police and taken to Changsari Police Station for further investigation.
Notably, the market value of the seized foreign cigarettes is around Rs 16 lakhs.
It may be mentioned that the operation was led by the Kamrup Superintendent of Police Hitesh Chandra Roy and Additional Superintendent of Police Asif Ahmed.
It is to be noted that the police further arrested the driver and the handyman of the vehicle in connection with the incident.
