Assam Govt to develop & expand Lachit Maidam in Jorhat

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday inaugurated a number of initiatives, including the renovation of Jorhat Stadium to world standards.

The Chief Minister also announced plans to enlarge the maidam of Lachit Barphukan and to build an Rs 100 crore Amrit Udayan, a heritage park, on the grounds of the 110 year old Central Jail in Jorhat, which was associated with India’s freedom movement.

While speaking at a public gathering at JDSA Field in Jorhat, the Chief Minister stated that Jorhat is popular for its illustrious tradition and culture. Jorhat is a centre for higher learning and is home to many universities and research institutions. Not to mention the poets, writers, and artists that our town has produced over the years.

According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Jorhat’s cultural atmosphere is a product of the community’s tireless efforts to uphold its traditions.

As part of the legend’s 400th birth anniversary, the Government of Assam commissioned CM Sarma to perform Bhumi Pujan for a project worth Rs 149.83 crore to build the maidam of Mahabir Lachit Barphukan at Gohaigaon, Jorhat.

The Chief Minister said that the project will contain, among other things, a 125-foot bronze statue of Lachit Barphukan, a museum, an auditorium, a residential arena, a water body, and an approach road.

The Chief Minister also revealed that the Jorhat Stadium is being expanded and developed on the scale of an international stadium by the government.

According to him, the stadium would have modern amenities and be similar to the one at Sarusujai in Guwahati. He claimed that building Jorhat Stadium in the style of an international stadium was his ultimate goal.
