Assam: Guwahati’s Dighalipukhuri Trees Spared as PWD Revises Flyover Project Plans Amid Protests
Guwahati– Following strong public opposition, Assam’s Public Works Department (PWD) assured the court on Wednesday that no trees would be cut in the Dighalipukhuri area for the proposed flyover project.
The assurance came after widespread protests led Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to re-evaluate and adjust the flyover’s design to protect the area’s trees.
In an affidavit presented to the court, the PWD outlined that the revised plan aligns with environmental concerns, incorporating a layout that spares the trees in this ecologically significant area. The updated design now includes an arm extending from GNB Road toward Lamb Road and another branch heading towards Rabindra Bhawan, balancing infrastructure goals with environmental preservation.
The department added that a new survey is being conducted to implement the modified design. Initially, a Haryana-based company had been contracted for tree relocation, but this plan was abandoned after local protests highlighted the cultural and ecological importance of Dighalipukhuri’s greenery.
