Guwahati: As many as nine members of the militant group Hmar People’s Convention-Democracy (HPC-D), which has its headquarters in Mizoram have disarmed and turned themselves in to police in Lakhipur in the Cachar district of Assam.

The cadres surrendered a total of five rifles including two AK-47s.

Additionally, it has been found that 104 more members of the militant group will be joining the mainstream next year.

As a political party leading a push for self-government in Mizoram’s north and northeast, HPC(D) was founded in 1986.

The HPC engaged in an armed fight for autonomy that reached extreme levels of violence after disagreeing with the terms of the Mizo Peace Accord of 1986.
