Assam: Lovlina Borgohain beats Former Champion Chen Nien-Chin

Guwahati: Assam daughter and the Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain upstaged former champion Chen Nien-Chin in the light middleweight division on Monday to enter round 16 of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships being held in Istanbul.

Lovlina is making her competitive boxing comeback for the first time since finishing on the podium at the Tokyo Olympics last year.

Lovlina (70kg) overcame the Chinese Taipei fighter, who had upset her in the semifinals of the 2018 event, by a 3-2 split decision.

It should be noted that Lovlina had previously defeated Chen in the Tokyo Olympics quarterfinals on her way to winning bronze.

In the round of 16, the 24-year-old Assamese fighter will face Cindy Ngamba, a three-time national champion from England.

It may be mentioned that the Indian boxers won one silver and three bronze medals in the 2019 World Championships, which were held in Russia.
