Assam: Man trampled to death by wild elephant in Digboi

Guwahati: A 71-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in the Tinsukia district of Assam.

The deceased was identified as Nirmal Singh Chetry.

As per the reports, the incident took place at Balijan Nepali Gaon in Digboi, when he went to cut grass in the morning to feed his goats. When he failed to return home, the villagers went looking for him and found him dead in a paddy field.

After collecting the post-mortem report and other necessary papers, the environment and forest department would pay the victim’s next of kin Rs 4 lakh in compensation, according to government guidelines.

It may be mentioned that the locals claimed that wild elephants used to visit the area from the Dehing Patkai reserve and there were several incidents reported earlier also.
