Assam: On-Duty Doctor Assaulted at Karimganj Civil Hospital by Deceased Patient’s Relatives

Guwahati, September 14, 2024 – In a disturbing incident at Karimganj Civil Hospital, Dr. Burhan Uddin, an on-duty physician in the children’s outpatient department, was physically assaulted by the relatives of a deceased patient. The attackers, identified as Satya Banik and Nityagopal Banik, accused Dr. Uddin of being responsible for the death of Somnath Banik, who passed away two months ago under his care.

The two relatives had been demanding Rs 5 lakh as compensation, alleging medical negligence. Tensions escalated when another family member, Pran, reportedly issued death threats to Dr. Uddin, warning that he would be harmed if the money was not paid within three days.

The situation came to a head when Satya and Nityagopal forcefully entered Dr. Uddin’s consultation room during a routine examination and assaulted him. Hospital authorities swiftly contacted the police, who arrived at the scene and arrested the two assailants.

Lipi Dev, the principal of Karimganj Civil Hospital, condemned the attack and voiced concerns over the rising violence against healthcare professionals. This incident has reignited calls for stronger security measures to protect medical staff from such violent confrontations.
