Assam Opposition Unites: 18 Parties Join Forces to Take on BJP in 2026 Assembly Elections
Guwahati, 5th August: In a significant political development, the United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA) has pledged to maintain its alliance until the 2026 state assembly elections. The UOFA, which initially comprised 16 parties, has expanded to include 18 parties, strengthening its resolve to contest every election as a single bloc over the next two years.
At a meeting held on Sunday, Congress spokesperson Bedabrat Bora stated that all parties have agreed to work together, prioritizing the defeat of the ruling BJP. The bloc’s next major challenge will be the panchayat elections later this year.
CPI(M) central committee member Isfaqur Rahman highlighted the meeting’s focus on resolving internal differences and improving coordination among the member parties. The UOFA also criticized the state government for its inadequate response to flood and erosion issues, urging more effective engagement with the Centre.
The 18-party alliance includes Congress, TMC, AAP, Raijor Dal, AJP, CPI(M), CPI, AIFB, CPI(ML), Jatiya Dal-Asom (U), Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar), Samajwadi Party, Purbancholio Lok Parishad (PLP), RJD, APHLC, Kamatapur Front, and Sonowal Kachari Gana Mancha.
