Assam Police Shoots Suspected Militant Youth Amid Controversy
Guwahati, 16th August: The Demow Police in Assam’s Sivasagar district reportedly opened fire at a youth suspected of having links to the proscribed militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I). The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, leaving the suspect, identified as Raju Ahmed, injured from bullet wounds.
The incident comes after Demow Police detained two youths a day before Independence Day celebrations. Dibyajyoti Chetia and Raju Ahmed were apprehended, and incriminating documents and mobile handsets were reportedly confiscated from them. However, the father of the injured suspect has claimed that the allegations against his son are false, accusing the police of framing him.
The father alleges that a paper was placed beside him during interrogation, claiming his son had demanded Rs 20 lakh in the name of ULFA. He further mentioned that the police told him to remain quiet and that his son would be released soon. The injured Raju Ahmed was sent to a hospital for treatment.
This incident has sparked controversy and raised questions about police conduct and the allegations against the youth.
