Assam: Small Indian Civet Found Dead on Gerukabari-Bijni Road; Suspected Hit-and-Run Incident

Guwahati, 16th August: The body of a small Indian civet was discovered late Thursday night on the Gerukabari-Bijni road, raising concerns about the impact of vehicular traffic on local wildlife. Preliminary investigations suggest that the civet was fatally struck by an unidentified vehicle.

Forest department officials from the Bijni Depot were promptly alerted and arrived at the scene to recover the animal’s remains. The exact cause of death will be determined following a detailed examination of the carcass.

The small Indian civet (Viverricula indica), a nocturnal mammal native to the Indian subcontinent, plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. Recognizable by its striped fur and elongated body, the species is integral to the region’s biodiversity. Civets are primarily insectivores, consuming insects, small vertebrates, and fruit, which helps control insect populations and aids in seed dispersal.

However, the small Indian civet, like many other species, faces increasing threats from habitat loss and road accidents. As human activity encroaches on their natural habitats, these animals are at greater risk of collisions with vehicles, highlighting the need for increased awareness and protective measures to safeguard local wildlife.
