Assam to burn 2479 rhino horns on 22 September

Guwahati: Assam government is all set to burn almost 2500 rhino horns on 22 September, on the occasion of World Rhino Day.

The news shared by Parimal Suklabaidya, the member of Assam Legislative Assembly on Twitter.

Taking the twitter he wrote, “Good morning #Assam! #WorldRhinoDay on 22nd Sept will witness the largest stockpile public destruction of reconciled rhino horns in line with @assamforest’s efforts to bust all myths related to rhino horns under the leadership of HCM Dr@himantabiswa@CMOfficeAssam.”

According to reports, 2,479 rhino horns will be burnt at Bokakhata in Assam’s Golaghat district to dispel myths about their usefulness and prevent poaching. The process to dispose the horns will be done in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Earlier, in the State Cabinet Meeting on 16 September, the government decided to dispose 2,479 rhino horns out of 2623 rhino horns in public.

It may be mentioned that the state cabinet further agreed that 94 of the 2,623 horns examined by the high-level committee will be preserved as heritage objects for academic purposes and 50 for court cases.
