Assam: Violence Erupts Ahead of Polls; Supporters’ Homes Targeted in Dibrugarh Candidate’s Camp

Guwahati, 19th April: Just hours before the commencement of polling in Assam, supporters of Lurinjyoti Gogoi, the parliamentary candidate of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), faced targeted violence as their residences were vandalized and set on fire by unidentified assailants.

Gogoi, contesting for Member of Parliament from Dibrugarh against former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, now confronts not only a political challenge but also the aftermath of this distressing act of violence against his supporters.

The incident occurred in the village of Nau-Saudang in Tingkhang, Assam, where at least four houses belonging to fervent supporters of Gogoi were engulfed in flames in a coordinated attack during the night.

Among the affected properties were the verandah and tea garden shed house owned by Pawan Bora, as well as the residences of Praveen Gogoi and Yadav Bara. This unsettling act of arson unfolded mere hours before the scheduled polling, causing considerable distress and alarm in the vicinity.

The incident is particularly concerning as it occurred close to polling station number 35 of the Nau-Saudang Primary School, heightening tensions and concerns surrounding the electoral process.
