Assam: Voting begins for Municipal Board across 977 wards

Guwahati: The Voting for 80 municipal boards, 977 wards across Assam begin today. Voting is to be held with all Covid-19 protocols and precautions.

There are a total of 2,532 candidates running, with the BJP fielding the highest (825). Congress has nominated 706 candidates, while the AGP has nominated 243.

There are 16,73,899 eligible voters, including 8,32,348 men, 8,41,534 females, and 17 transgenders.

Meanwhile, for the first time history of local body election in the state, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are to be used for voting.

A total of 16.73 lakh (16,73,899) persons have registered to vote in the urban elections. Among them are 8,32,348 men, 8,41,534 women, and 17 transgender people.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma taking the Twitter wrote, “Municipal elections are an important step towards ensuring public participation in governance of urban areas. As polls to urban local bodies are being held across Assam today, I urge everyone to exercise their democratic right for determining their future.”

It may be mentioned that the elections will be held in 24 districts throughout the state, with 2,054 voting booths set up across the state.The counting of votes will take place on March 9.
