Assam’s First Phase Campaigning Ends with Confidence in BJP’s Victory

Guwahati, 17th April: As the first phase of Lok Sabha election campaigning in Assam draws to a close, Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing the Vijay Sankalp Sabha at Sivasagar, Jorhat Lok Sabha, expressed confidence in securing 50 percent of the votes in each of the contending seats.

With polling scheduled for April 19, voters in five Lok Sabha constituencies – Kaziranga, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, and Jorhat – will cast their ballots.

A total of 38 candidates, including Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, have filed their nominations for the first phase polls.

Ahead of the election, the General Administration Department issued an order stating that all government and non-government offices, PRIs, urban local bodies, educational institutions, business, and commercial establishments, including banks, tea gardens, and industries within the specified jurisdiction of the constituencies, will remain closed on polling days.

Out of the 35 candidates facing off against each other in the first phase, fifteen are ‘crorepatis,’ with the richest being independent woman candidate Diluwara Begum Chowdhury from the Kaziranga seat.

Among the BJP candidates, Sonitpur nominee and MLA Ranjit Dutta stands out with total assets worth Rs 8.97 crore, comprising Rs 5.52 crore in movable assets and Rs 3.45 crore in immovable assets.
