Preparations in Full Swing as Meghalaya Gears Up for First Phase of Elections

Northeast Desk, 14th April: The dispatch of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to polling stations in Tura, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, marks the final stages of readiness for the electoral process in the state.

Security measures have been heightened to ensure a smooth and secure voting experience for the residents of Meghalaya, with Election Commission officials overseeing the preparations. The deployment of security personnel and the presence of officials reflect the meticulous approach taken by election authorities towards the electoral event.

District election officer Jagdish Chelani provided insights into the preparations, stating, “Today was our P-2 day. Movement of polling parties has already started. In West Garo Hills, we have 539 polling stations, while in the entire Garo Hills region, we have 1224 polling stations. We have taken many steps to ensure that the voter is at ease and to prevent any undue influence on the voter. We have marked 72 vulnerable polling stations in the West Garo Hills district.”

Chelani further elaborated on security measures, mentioning, “In all these stations, we will deploy half a section of the CAPF and two civil police personnel. In the entire Garo Hills region, we have nearly 8.23 lakh voters in five districts, with 4 lakh voters in the West Garo Hills region. The voting percentage in the state is generally very high, always above the National average.”

Meghalaya is poised to go to polls in the first phase scheduled for April 19th, marking the commencement of the electoral process in the state. With candidates and political parties intensifying their campaign efforts, the anticipation is high among voters. All eyes are on Meghalaya’s electoral dynamics, with expectations of robust participation and a fair electoral process shaping the narrative leading up to the polls.
