Assault in Jorhat Sparks Outrage; Young Woman Attacked by Bir Lachit Sena Member

Guwahati: A disturbing incident unfolded near Nirmal Chariali in the heart of Jorhat city on January 18, when a young woman was physically assaulted by a man, sparking widespread outrage. What began as a verbal altercation quickly escalated into a violent confrontation, drawing the attention of the public and authorities alike.

Ritu Phukan, a member of the Bir Lachit Sena and its general secretary for the Jorhat region, was caught on CCTV footage assaulting the woman. The video showed Phukan grabbing the woman by the hair and physically attacking her in full view of passersby on a busy street. The bullying behavior of Phukan shocked onlookers and quickly garnered public attention.

The Jorhat police acted swiftly and detained Phukan, taking him into custody for his actions. However, the situation took a troubling turn when a bystander, who had tried to intervene and protect the woman, was met with aggression from members of the group to which the assailant belonged. The bystander, a pan shop owner, was later taken to the police station and reportedly forced to apologize for his involvement in the incident, despite his attempt to assist the victim.

The incident has sparked further controversy and concern about the conduct of the Bir Lachit Sena and the broader implications of group violence. Local authorities are under increasing pressure to address the issue and ensure justice for the victim, while also investigating the involvement of others who may have contributed to the escalation of the situation.
