Coir Expo Awareness Programme held in Guwahati
Guwahati: Coir Board of India organized North East Coir Expo Awareness Programme at Cotton University on Friday.
The event was organized to promote the use and re-use of coir in Assam. In the programme, the coir artisans demonstrated how coconut husk or coir could be recycled into various goods such as doormats, ropes, toys and more which could be used in our day-to-day lives and are environmental friendly at the same time.
Addressing the event, Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Member of Legislative Assembly, East Guwahati constituency said that today the coir artisans have shown us how coconut husk could be recycled into valuable goods and if such recycling methods of the coconut husk or coir is carried out in Assam on a larger scale then this will help the people in earning livelihood for themselves.
P.G. Totkar, Zonal Director East, Coir Board of India, in his speech said that the Coir Board of India has been engaged in the development of the coir industry since 1953 and has been working to uplift it since then. The Director also said that the Coir Board has developed a machine through which they can convert coconut husk into fibers and are planning to open training centers in Assam to provide training to the people here on how to do that.
The event was attended by Prof. Bhabesh Chandra Goswami, Vice-Chancellor, Cotton University, Prof. Diganta Kumar Das, Registrar, Cotton University along with officials and Coir Artisans from all across Assam.
