Dilip Kumar passes away at 98

Guwahati: Veteran Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar took his last breathe on Wednesday morning at the age 98.

As per reports, the actor was suffering from respiratory issues since a month. Kumar was admitted at the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai. Kumar was accompanied by his wife and actress Saira Banu till his last breath.

Dilip Kumar’s death has been mourned by the entire film fraternity as well as his fans. Kumar was born on 11 December, 1922, in Peshawar, British India (now in Pakistan).

Dilip Kumar’s early education took place in Nashik.  He later decided to act in films and made his debut with the 1944 film ‘Jwar Bhata’.  His pairing with actress Noor Jahan became a hit after the initial films did not work.  The film ‘Jugnu’ became Dilip Kumar’s first hit film.  He had given many successive hits.  His film ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ became the highest grossing film of that time, it was released in August 1960, and the film was the most expensive film made at that time.

Dilip Kumar has received eight Filmfare Awards.  According to media reports, Dilip Kumar’s name is recorded in the Guinness World Records for winning the most awards.  Dilip Kumar was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and Padma Vibhushan in 2015.  He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994.  He was also a member of Rajya Sabha from 2000 to 2006.  He was also awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s best civilian honour, in 1998.
