ED questions Rahul Gandhi in money laundering probe In National Herald Case

Guwahati: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is questioning Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at their Delhi offices in connection with the National Herald case.

Gandhi appeared at the directorate’s office amid much pandemonium on Monday after being summoned by the ED in a money laundering case involving the National Herald newspaper.

Earlier in the day, Congress workers held protests over Gandhi’s interrogation in the case. Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi’s sister and the Congress’ general secretary, accompanied him.

According to reports, Gandhi arrived at the office with his lawyer by his side. Top Congress figures such as Adhir Ranjan Chaudhari, KC Venugopal, Deepender Hooda, and Jairam Ramesh were arrested in Delhi as a result.

Workers and some leaders were detained by police when they began a march from the party headquarters. Workers sat on the streets and continued their protest after seeing police barricading the office.

Several party members were arrested earlier in the day for shouting “Satymeva Jayate” and “Rahul Zindabad” in support of Gandhi at the headquarters, where they had congregated for the march.

It should be recalled that, alleging a “law and order crisis,” police had denied Congress permission to organise the march and had posted heavy security at Gandhi’s apartment and the ED office.

However, the party opted to go forward with the march. Randeep Surjewala had said earlier this morning that they would march peacefully towards the directorate’s office, and that if they were stopped, they would face detention.

The matter is linked to an ED investigation into alleged financial irregularities involving Young India and Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the publisher of the National Herald newspaper.

After a Delhi court took cognizance of a private complaint made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy in 2013, a new case was launched under the criminal provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
