Ex CPI-M Opposes Assam CM Sarma’s Remarks on Muslim Marriage Practices
Guwahati: Hannan Mollah, the leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and a former Lok Sabha MP mocked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his remark on Muslim marriages on Thursday.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Hannan Mollah accused Sarma of becoming a religious leader rather than a chief minister.
Mollah said, “Assam’s chief minister is being replaced with a Paigambar (religious leader). Every day, he gives religious advice to people of many faiths.”
He further said that the chief minister is merely dividing people for political gain.
“If you want it done, write a law and people will follow it, but why are you just making a statement and separating people? It will only be used for political reasons. It has absolutely nothing to do with national security “he added.
While calling for an equitable share of property for the wife, Assam CM Sarma also proposed that a Muslim man marry one woman instead of three. Instead of Talaq, the chief minister advocated for a legal divorce among the community.
CM Sarma stated during a press conference on Wednesday said, “Assam administration is quite clear that no Muslim man should marry three women. Give a judicial divorce instead of a Talaq. Daughters should be given an equal portion of the property as sons. Give the wife a 50 percent stake in the property. The government’s and ordinary Muslims’ viewpoints are identical.”
According to ANI, the chief minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the reduction in “discrimination against students of the northeast” and said the success was due to the PM’s outreach to the region in recent years.
