Ferry Services Between Majuli and Jorhat Suspended as Brahmaputra River Crosses Danger Levels

Guwahati, 8th August: In response to the Brahmaputra River’s water level rising above danger levels, ferry services between Majuli and Jorhat have been suspended once again. The Inland Water Transport Department (IWTD) made the decision to suspend ferry operations, affecting the route between Jorhat’s Nimatighat and Kamalabari ferry ghat in Majuli.

The Brahmaputra River’s escalating water levels prompted this suspension, a move aimed at ensuring the safety of commuters and vessels alike. This action comes in the backdrop of the daily flood report by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) indicating that the Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger levels. However, no other rivers in Assam are currently at their highest flood levels.

The flood report also noted that three revenue circles in two districts, Dhemaji and Dibrugarh, are still experiencing flooding at the moment. Jonai and Sissiborgaon revenue circles in Dhemaji, as well as Chabua in Dibrugarh, continue to grapple with the impacts of the flooding.

Amid these challenges, a relief camp in Dhemaji’s Jonai is offering shelter and support to 48 inmates, including eight children. The flooding has disrupted normal life in these areas, necessitating the provision of such relief measures.

The past 24 hours, however, have not seen any loss of human lives, missing persons, or damage to property, including houses and livestock. Nonetheless, the report did note incidents of erosion in various regions, including Chapar in Dhubri, Tengakhat in Dibrugarh, Bihpuria in Lakhimpur, Laharighat in Morigaon, and Barkhetri in Nalbari. Furthermore, a landslide was reported in Dima Hasao’s Haflong over the same period.
