Guwahati: Guwahati Municipal Corporation election has begun in the city and as on 10. 25 the voting percentage was 14.09.
The fate of a total of 197 candidates will be decided with the 60-member GMC election being held in the city today.
With a total of 7, 96,829 people ready to select who comes to power, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies, Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are the primary political parties in play.
AAP is trying to expand in the northeastern area, with Guwahati being a big component of that ambition, after a successful foray in the Punjab assembly elections and victories in municipal wards in Lakhimpur and Tinsukia districts.
For the AAP, Delhi MLA Atishi had come to campaign with Assam state coordinator Bhaben Choudhury, who predicted that the party will gain a majority and become the government.
Meanwhile, Assam’s Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, and other members of his cabinet came down to campaign for various BJP and allied candidates.
Assam Pradesh Congress president Bhupen Bora led the campaigning for the Congress.
Candidates promised to address concerns such as clean drinking water, water logging in the streets, and good roadways, among other things, in order to lure voters.
Notably, the BJP has already won three wards without opposition, implying that the other 57 wards would be polled. It had allocated seven seats to its partner, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).
In the GMC polls, which will be counted on April 24, electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used.
