Guwahati: BJP secures clean sweep in GMC Election
Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies won all 60 seats in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections announced on Sunday.
The saffron party won 58 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Asom Jatiya Parishad each received one (AJP).
According to the Assam State Election Commission’s preliminary findings, the BJP (52 wards) and its allies Asom Gana Parishad (six wards) triumphed in 58 seats, including three that were previously elected unchallenged by saffron party candidates.
Meanwhile, Masuma Begum, an AAP candidate, won Ward 42, while Hukum Chand Ali, an AJP candidate, defeated the BJP candidates in Ward 1.
It may be mentioned that on April 22, polling took place in 57 of the 60 wards of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning the other three unchallenged.
The turnout for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation elections was 52.80%.
The incumbent BJP was in the lead with 54 wards, followed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with 39, and the Assam Jatiya Parishad with 25.
