Historic Move: Assam Rifles Camp to Relocate from Langthabal Old Palace

In a significant development for Manipur, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh inaugurated the construction of infrastructure to relocate the Assam Rifles camp from the premises of the historic Langthabal Old Palace. This long-awaited move addresses the persistent demands of the state’s citizens and student unions to preserve the cultural and historical significance of the site.

The Assam Rifles camp, situated within the Manipur University campus at Canchipur, will now be shifted to an adjacent area. This decision marks a major step towards safeguarding the Langthabal Palace, which served as a summer residence for the Manipur kings after the Kangla Fort.

Expressing gratitude for the cooperation of the Assam Rifles authorities and the support of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, CM Biren Singh emphasized the historic nature of this development. He acknowledged the delay in realizing this objective due to communication gaps but commended the Assam Rifles for their understanding in vacating the historic buildings.

Addressing criticism from the Mizo National Front (MNF), CM Biren Singh dismissed the allegations, urging political maturity and refraining from interfering in another state’s affairs. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to finding the individual missing from an army camp, calling the incident unfortunate.

Manipur University Registrar Professor W. Chandbabu hailed the government’s initiative, stating that it would bring immense relief and satisfaction to the people of Manipur. He highlighted the historical and cultural importance of the Langthabal Palace and expressed hope that this move would foster a stronger emotional connection between the people and their heritage.
