Indian President Droupadi Murmu Begins Historic Pacific Diplomatic Tour
International Desk, 5th August: Indian President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Fiji on August 5, commencing a landmark three-nation diplomatic tour to the Pacific region. This visit, which includes stops in New Zealand and Timor-Leste, is the first by an Indian head of state to Fiji and Timor-Leste, and aims to bolster India’s relations with Pacific nations under its Act East Policy.
During her two-day visit to Fiji, President Murmu will engage with Fijian President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. She is scheduled to address the Fijian Parliament and meet with the Indian diaspora community in Fiji.
From August 7-9, Murmu will travel to New Zealand, where she will meet Governor-General Cindy Kiro and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. Her activities in New Zealand will include a speech at an education conference and interactions with the Indian community.
The tour will conclude in Timor-Leste on August 10, where Murmu plans to meet with Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao. This diplomatic journey underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its engagement in the Pacific region.
