Mairang to be Meghalaya’s 12th District

Shillong: The Meghalaya Government announced that Mairang will be the twelfth district of Meghalaya. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and he also promised that the new district would come into existence before the celebration of Independence Day.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, announcing the name of the new district, said that upgrading Mairang sub-division into a district will improve the life of the people living there. However, he was neutral on the demand of making Sohra a district.

On Monday KHADC Chief Executive Member Titosstarwel Chyne and Shela MLA, Balajed Kupar Synrem met the Chief Minister to pursue the long-pending demand for upgrading Sohra civil sub-division into a district. The demand for Sohra district has been pending since 1990 and governments that managed come in power in Meghalaya have been alleged of ignoring the pleas of the locals.

Chyne after the meeting said that they had an informal discussion with CM to upgrade Sohra into a district, and following this, he further urged the people to have patients since the government has its own mechanism to examine the demand.
