Manipur Police Warn Against Sharing Videos of Panicked Students During Protest

Northeast Desk, 2nd August: Manipur Police have issued a stern warning against the circulation of videos showing panicked students during a recent protest that turned violent in Imphal East. The rally, which escalated on August 1, forced police to use tear gas to control the crowd.

In a statement released on social media, Manipur Police detailed the incident that took place in Akampat. “The crowd turned unruly and started attacking police vehicles and pelting stones. The police had to resort to firing minimal rounds of tear gas shells to control the unruly crowd,” the statement read.

Following the event, videos began to circulate on social media showing students in a state of panic inside classrooms. The police have taken a firm stance against the spread of these images, considering them potentially inflammatory.

“Some people made videos of students being panicked in classrooms and circulated them on social media with the intention of spreading panic among the public and students,” the police statement noted. Authorities expressed concern that such content could exacerbate tensions in an already volatile situation.

Manipur Police have appealed to the public to refrain from sharing these videos, emphasizing the potential legal consequences of doing so. “It is appealed to the public not to do such things for creating panic among the general masses, else strict legal action will be taken,” the statement warned.

The warning underscores the police’s efforts to maintain public order and prevent the spread of fear through social media in the aftermath of the protest.
