Manipur Polls: Police personnel killed in Firing
Imphal (Manipur): A Manipur Police officer who was on duty for the first phase of the Assembly election was killed in a suspected incidence of accidental firing on Monday.
“A Manipur Police personnel, who was on poll duty on Monday, was murdered in a “suspected incidence of unintentional discharge” from his service rifle during the first phase of assembly elections to 38 seats in the state,” said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Rajesh Agarwal.
The incident occurred in the Churachandpur district’s Tipaimukh assembly constituency. Naorem Ibochouba, a native of Kakching district, was recognised as the police officer, he claimed.
Agarwal expressed his condolences on the officer’s death, adding that his remains had been airlifted to Imphal and transported to a state-run hospital for autopsy.
Meanwhile, in N Biren Singh’s Heingang constituency, there were tense scenes and a formal complaint from the Congress candidate about his agents not being permitted to vote.
A poll interruption incident was also reported at Keithelmanbi, which caused the polling process to be delayed, according to CEO Agarwal.
He said that EVM machines in polling sites had malfunctioned.
Over 67 percent of the 12 lakh voters who were eligible to vote decided the fate of 173 candidates, 15 of them were women.
The polling began at 7 a.m. and finished at 4 p.m.
The second round of voting for the remaining 22 seats will take place on March 5, with the ballots being tabulated on March 10.
