Manipur still tense: Mob clash with security force in Imphal
Guwahati, June 15: The situation in Manipur is far from being over as a group of angry protesters clashed with the security forces in capital town Imphal on Thursday following which the security forces had to fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
The clash between the protesters and security forces took place at New Checkon area in Imphal when a group of protesters were staging a protest as their houses were set on fire on Wednesday night. There is however, no report of any human causality during the incident on Thursday.
On Wednesday night some miscreants also set on fire the house of Manipur’s Industry Minister Nemcha Kipgen at Kipgen at Kangkokpi district. The Minister was, however, not at home when the arson took place.
The fresh incidents are taking place after nine people were killed and ten others were injured at Khamenlok village bordering Imphal East and Kangkokpi district in the state on Tuesday night.
There is no improvement in the law and order situation in Manipur even as over 40 days have passed the worst ever violence between the majority Meiteis and tribal Kukis have taken place on May 3, killing over 100 and injuring over 300 others so far.
The fresh incidents of violence have been taking place after the state and central government formed peace committees headed by Maniour Governor Anusuiya Uikey and Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who had started visited the violence hit areas and interacting with the affected people.
It may be mentioned here that the northesstern state of Manipur has been burning since May 3 this year due to a clash between the Kuki and Meitei population.
Uion Home Minister Amit Shah also visited the state recently and appealed the people to maintain restraints. However, violence has been taking place at brief intervals in different parts of the state.
As of now curfew has been on in 11 out of the total 16 districts of Manipur and mobile and broadband internet service has been banned across the state by the government. Over 10000 central armed police force has been deployed in Manipur to contain the violence.
