Manipur Violence: BJP MLA Critically Injured After Being Attacked By Mob
National, 5 May: A crowd attacked BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte after he left the state secretariat after speaking with the chief minister N Biren Singh. This occurs while peace and order in Manipur is deteriorating and violence has broke out between tribal groups and the Meitei, who make up the majority in the state.
Valte is a three-term MLA from Thanlon in the Pherzawl district, was attacked while his way to his official residence in Imphal. The MLA and his driver were attacked by the furious throng but his PSO managed to flee. The MLA is now being treated at Imphal’s Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and is in serious condition. Valte belongs to the Kuki tribe. He was Manipur’s Tribal Affairs and Hills Minister under the previous BJP government.
Following recent unrest and violence in the state, the central government promulgated Article 355 to take control of security in Manipur. To reestablish peace and order in the state, the clause that indicates that it is the responsibility of the Union to defend every state against external invasion and domestic unrest has been used.
In order to stop any additional violence or unrest, the Imphal-Churachandpur road has been secured by police and security personnel as part of the measures. The emergency provisions found in Part XVIII of the Indian Constitution, from Articles 352 to 360, include Article 355. It gives the central government the authority to take any necessary action to safeguard a state against internal unrest and foreign assault.
