Meghalaya Assembly Elections: BJP’s Ernest Mawrie loses from West Shillong Constituency with 4146 Votes

Guwahati: The BJP candidate from the West Shillong constituency, Ernest Mawrie, lost the Meghalaya assembly elections with only 20.07% of the vote, according to the website of the Election Commission of India.

The vote counting procedure started on March 2 at 8 am for 59 assembly segments in the northeastern state. Almost 77.9% of the voters exercised their right to vote during the elections.

Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) chief Conrad Sangma had a gathering of supporters at his home in Shillong to congratulate him on the success of the NPP in other constituencies.

The Meghalaya assembly elections this year were notable because they were considered as a direct confrontation between the BJP and the current government’s NPP. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed rallies in the state as part of the BJP’s intense campaign there.

However, the outcomes indicate that the NPP has kept control of its stronghold in the state. The party has been in charge in Meghalaya since 2018, when it joined forces with the BJP to form a coalition government.

The election results could lead to a change in the state’s leadership, which would have a substantial impact on the political climate of the state. All eyes are now on Meghalaya’s future chief minister as the NPP maintains its advantage in the state.
