Meghalaya Assembly Polls: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to address rally on Feb 22

Guwahati: Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress and a prominent campaigner will visit to Shillong for the upcoming Meghalaya assembly elections on February 22.

Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to campaign for the party’s candidates at Malki Ground around 11 AM.

On the other hand, Shillong-based Congress Member for the Lok Sabha Vincent Pala believes the party has a decent chance of winning the majority in the Meghalayan parliament.

Further, Pala asserted that the Congress is now stronger with the infusion of younger leaders as the old and corrupt have left the party. 

The Lok Sabha Member, who is this time running for assembly, acknowledged that he has chief ministerial aspirations.

Out of the 370 candidates in the 2018 Meghalaya Assembly elections that were examined, 25 (7%) had filed criminal charges against themselves. Comparatively, there will be a 1% decrease in criminal history among candidates in the 2023 Assembly elections.

The ADR report also suggests 4 per cent (15) of candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves. Notably, 6% (21) of candidates in the 2018 Meghalaya Assembly elections had major criminal convictions against them.

According to the ADR report, 5 (8%) out of 60 candidates from the INC, 6 (11%) out of 57 candidates from the NPP, 1 (2%) out of 60 candidates from the BJP, and 3 (5%) out of 56 candidates from the AITC were among the major parties to have the highest number of candidates with criminal cases against them.
