Meghalaya: Bridge Collapse Sparks Concerns of Smuggling Activity in State

Northeast Desk, 16th April: A significant bridge collapse near Dimapara in Meghalaya, India, on Tuesday has raised concerns, particularly due to the involvement of two overloaded trucks transporting sugar on a route known for bypassing checkpoints.

The collapsed bridge, spanning 60 meters, is located on the state highway connecting West Garo Hills with South Garo Hills. Despite restrictions on heavy vehicles, the collapse occurred as two overloaded trucks attempted to cross simultaneously, leading to the bridge’s structural failure. The presence of spilled cargo and the choice of this specific route suggest the possibility of illicit activities, potentially smuggling.

Reports indicate a noticeable increase in the number of trucks transporting sugar towards the bordering districts of South Garo Hills and South West Khasi Hills, particularly during nighttime. These trucks are suspected of heading towards Bangladesh, raising further concerns about the prevalence of illegal operations in the area.

The authorities concerned are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, focusing on enforcement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future and to combat any potential smuggling activities along the route.
